Preparing for College
Lovell Academy’s School Counselor guides students through the college admissions process, whether they are already committed to a particular college or university or interested in pursuing their academic options. Our college-preparatory program fulfills NCAA Division I, II, and III eligibility requirements. Students receive individualized academic planning, core-course alignment, and guidance regarding use of the NCAA Eligibility Center to prepare for college and athletic success beyond Lovell Academy.
Grade 8 & 9: Building Foundations

Develop strong study habits, organization, and time management while balancing academics and hockey

Begin building relationships with teachers, advisors, and coaches

Explore interests inside and outside the classroom

Focus on academic consistency and personal responsibility

Begin working toward NCAA core-course requirements in English, math, science, and social science
Grade 10: Exploring and Growing

Take more challenging coursework with the help and recommendations of teachers

Continue completing NCAA-approved core courses

Register with the NCAA Eligibility Center, when appropriate

Begin early conversations about college pathways, including NCAA Division I, II, and III options

Learn about standardized testing expectations and NCAA eligibility rules

Participate in leadership opportunities within the dorms, classroom, or team environment

Continue developing independence and accountability
Grade 11: College Preparation

Meet more frequently with school counselor to discuss academic progress, NCAA eligibility status and post secondary plans

Complete remaining NCAA core-course requirements

Take standardized tests if required by prospective colleges

Build a balanced college list based on academic fit, athletic goals, and personal preferences

Communicate with college coaches under NCAA recruiting guidelines, with support from Lovell coaches

Request 1-2 teacher recommendations
Grade 12 & PG: Application and Transition

Finalize college list with counselor support

Complete college applications and essays

Submit transcripts, recommendations, and school profile materials

Continue strong academic performance through graduation

Ongoing College Application Support
Our school counselor remains available to our players who have graduated and are playing junior hockey before attending college. These players are provided with any guidance or assistance they need with their application process.
